Level: Boss
Type: Dragonkin
Location: Blackwing Lair
Tank Gear: Fire Resist
Raid Gear: Fire Resist
Vaelastrasz' Attacks
- Fire Nova
- 3063 to 3937 Fire damage to all targets in front of him. For this reason, the Main Tank needs to point him away from the raid.
- Burning Adrenaline
- Cast every 15 seconds on a random mana user. A raid members have their damage done increased by 100% and their attack speed increased by 100% and all spells become instant cast. Reduces max health by 5% every second. 4376 to 5624 explosive damage is done to surrounding allies when that player dies (please move away from the others!). Where you will move to will be explained (under the walkway directly behind his tail). Every 45 sec cast on the person at the top of the Hate List. Every third cast will be against the member at the top of Vael's hate list: it is impossible to not lose tanks because of this.
- Essence of the Red
- Cast on the raid at the start of the fight. It restores 500 mana per second. Restores 50 energy per second for Rogues and Cat Druids. Grants 20 rage per second to Warriors.
- Tail Whip
- An attack made to anyone in back of him and will throw you to one side.
- Cleave
- Can chain to other players. Should only hit the MT if everyone is positioned correctly. MT will be directly in front, MT 2-5 will be just behind his front legs.
Vaelastrasz Strategy
Initially, Vael will be lying on the floor, flagged as friendly. The encounter will begin when the puller (the first main tank) talks to Vael and begins the event. If there is a wipe, Vael will stay in the middle of the room and positioning for a next attempt will need to be done carefully, and the tank will need to approach Vael head-on so as not to turn him on the raid.
Positioning
- Casters and their healers should position themselves on one side of Vael against the wall.
- Tank lineup should position themselves on the other side.
- Hunters and Mages just to the outside of the first support pillar as you walk in. This is to be able to quickly run in when you get Burning Affliction so that you can maximize your insta-cast DPS (Mages consider spamming Arcane Missiles during the normal part of the fight, and once you get BA, spam Frostbolt).
- Rogues and other melee DPS should move in to attack Vael facing the middle of his body so as to be between his frontal attacks and his tail swipes. Near his back legs and 15 yards from the MT2-5 group. Rogues stay to the left side so that if you do turn Vael by stealing aggro, he is still pointed away from the rest of the raid.
- Offtanks should be closer to Vael's front, near his shoulders, so that they can pick up Vael when the main tank dies.
- A priest should be in every rogues group to use Prayer of Healing to help keep them alive.
- Every Paladin will need to heal.
- "Blow Up" position is under the walkway directly behind his tail.
Main Tank Transitions
At least every 45 seconds, the Main Tank will be afflicted with Burning Adrenaline. This will kill the tank. After about 10 seconds after being afflicted, the next Offtank should steal aggro since the MT's maximum hit point pool will diminish to 50% of normal by that point. The previous tank should move away from the raid so as to not kill anyone with their explosion.
* FYI With right timing/healing/shielding/FR Pots/Last Stand or Lifegiving Gem a tank can live through this but don't count on it
This is the key to the fight and will be explained in detail on voice. But a key thing to remember is Vael starts at 30% health. When he is at 20% health ALL warriors including MT at the time will be in Battle Stance spaming Execute.
- Brief MT transtion overview (BA could be the debuff or could be they die early)
- MT 1-3 Start in Defensive stance MT 4-5 Battle Stance with Salvation
- MT 1 Tanks as normal 2-3 spam HS and MS/ShieldSlam (not sunder armor/revenge)
- MT has BA MT 2 = MT 1
- When Vael = 20% MT 2 Battle stance spamin execute
- MT 2 has BA MT 3 moves in sunder etc when MT 2 dies Battle stance and spam execute. MT 4 waits until called and then spams execute. MT 5 the same
- MT 3 has BA MT 4 clicks off slavation and tanks via Execute spam
- MT 4 has BA MT 5 does the same above
- If still not dead will be a wipe as the debuff to give you the mana/rage/energy will wear off making the fight near impossible to win
DPS classes (particularly Rogues, and Dagger Rogues further in particular) should do what they can to ditch aggro on the first transition (Rogues, vanish!). It is typically the most difficult transition.
* Due to the how close to the zone everyone is on this fight SS should be on Rogues to make sure they live through out the fight as they will be the most useful if they die, note they will never get BA so they should not die unless they steal agro.
Fire Resist
High Fire Resist is very valuable in this fight: think Ragnaros levels of Fire Resist:
- Casters: 150 FR
- Melee: 200 FR
- Tanks: 315 FR
Getting the LBRS buff can greatly help the raid survive the fight once the strategy is down. Alternatively, making:
Magic Resistance Potion
could help a bit.
